Lopez, Strong Win Event Titles At Oregon Invite

EUGENE, Ore. - Seniors Pete Lopez and Brandon Strong won event titles in the 200m and the 800m, respectively, leading the Arizona State track and field contingent that competed at the Oregon Invitational at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., Saturday.
Competing in the twilight session, Lopez clocked the fastest men's 200m time (21.39), while Strong won the men's 800m race in 1:49.44, just three-tenths of a second off his personal-best. Freshman Jeff Dodge also competed in the men's 800m, finishing fifth in 1:51.68.
In the men's 1500m race, sophomore Dan Maher finished fourth in a personal-best of 3:50.37, just ahead of teammate, senior Cheyne Jones who placed fifth in 3:50.92. Junior Ronnie Buchanan clocked a time of 14:22.99 to finish fifth in the men's 5000m, and was followed by junior J.R. Cox in 10th with a time of 14:38.33.
Junior Jeremy Rasmussen recorded a season-best time in the men's 3000m steeplechase, placing ninth in 9:00.83.
On the women's side, sophomore Jen Hurbis turned in a personal-best in the women's 5000m, placing fifth with a time of 16:58.02. ASU's two competitors in the women's 1500m, senior Nicole Simmons and freshman Desiree Davila, finished fourth and sixth, respectively, with season-best times of 4:30.50 and 4:31.71.
In the day session of competition, freshman Mandi Fitz-Gustafson placed second in the women's 1500m race, with a time of 4:40.18.
After this weekend, the Sun Devils have only one regular season meet remaining on the 2002 schedule before the Pac-10 and NCAA Championships, the annual double dual with in-state rivals Arizona and Northern Arizona, Saturday, May 4, in Tucson.
