Men's Golf Finishes Fifth at Pac-10 Championships
April 27, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - John Ellis shot a 1-over par 73 in Saturday's final round to finish tied for seventh at 289 at the Pacific-10 Championships, played at the 7,022-yard, par-72 Trysting Tree Golf Course.
As a team, Oregon shot an 8-over 368 and slipped one spot to fifth in the final standings at 1471. In addition to Ellis' 73, the Ducks counted a 72 from Brandon Harnden, a 73 Chris Carnahan and 75s from Aaron Byers and Mike Sica.
'It wasn't a stellar round by any means, but it wasn't terrible either,' said Oregon coach Steve Nosler. 'A couple of our guys fought really hard just to get what they got.'
Defending champion USC, which entered the day in third place, took control with the best round of the day, a 4-under 356. That gave the ninth-ranked Trojans a 15-stroke win over Stanford, which shot a 373 Saturday. USC finished the tournament with 1441 strokes, just one over par. Stanford had 1456, while Oregon State was two shots back in the third at 1458.
UCLA used the second-lowest round of the day, a 359, to overtake the Ducks for fourth at 1469. Oregon was next at 1471, followed by No. 10 Washington (1476), No. 22 Arizona (1482), Washington State (1486), Arizona State (1490) and California (1501).
'I would have liked to finished a little higher,' said Nosler, whose team was tied for last after the Thursday's opening round. 'Except for that first round, we hung in there fairly decently.'
Third round leader Jim Seki of Stanford had a 2-over 74 Saturday, but it was enough to win Pac-10 medalist honors by one stroke over teammate Philip Rowe and USC's Kevin Stadler. Seki finished the tournament at 4-under 284.
Byers and Harnden tied for 11th at 2-over 290, while Carnahan tied for 35th at plus-10. It was the highest conference finish of their careers for Ellis, Byers and Harnden.
With the upper division finish in the Pac-10 tournament, Oregon has all but locked up a spot for the NCAA West Regional, May 16-18 at Albuquerque, N.M.
'I would expect we will have to play a little better to advance at regionals,' said Nosler.
