April 27, 2002
TEMPE, Ariz.- The University of Oregon softball team upset No. 5-ranked Arizona State Saturday at Farrington Stadium. Oregon made its hurdle over the 32-game losing streak in Pac-10 play. This is the first Pac-10 win since last year against Arizona State on April 1. Today's game also broke the 20-game losing streak on the road in Pac-10 play since April 16, 2000 at Stanford.
Arizona State scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the second on a Nichole Thompson home run. Four short innings later, the Ducks took the lead scoring four runs. Oregon had one out with Jenn Poore on first and Alyssa Laux up at the plate. Laux homered over the right field fence to grab the lead 2-1. The Ducks weren't finished yet though. Mari Lyn Petrick singled and Andrea Vidlund was hit by a pitch. This brought up Senior Kristi Hall who reached on base by an error. Ashley Richards doubled to left field scoring Petrick and Vidlund. The Ducks scored four runs on three hits and one error.
The Sun Devils fought every last pitch scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh. However, that was not enough for Arizona State. The Ducks held on to upset the Sun Devils, 4-2. Lindsey Kontra picked up the win for the Ducks giving up two runs on nine hits and three strikeouts. Erica Beach recorded a loss giving up four runs on five hits and three strikeouts.
The Ducks are 22-23 overall and 1-13 in Pac-10. Arizona State falls 37-13, 7-6. Oregon will face Arizona State again Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Farrington Stadium.
