Arizona Avoids Sweep With 15-12 Win Over Baseball
April 28, 2002
LOS ANGELES - Center fielder Brian Anderson went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI while designated hitter Marc Kaiser went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI Sunday and the Arizona Wildcats salvaged the Pac-10 Conference series with a 15-12 win against the USC Trojans at Dedeaux Field.
Arizona improves to 28-18 on the season and 6-9 in Pac-10 play while USC falls to 28-17 overall and 11-4 in conference. The Trojans saw their winning streak snapped at eight games, but have still won 16 of their last 20 games. USC remains in first place, 1 1/2 games ahead of Washington, who recorded a series sweep this weekend at California.
The Wildcats scored a run in their first five innings, including four in the first and second innings. Anderson led off the scoring in the first with an RBI single, plating shortstop Brad Hassey. Kaiser and third baseman John Hardy hit RBI doubles while first baseman Pat Reilly hit an RBI single.
Kaiser hit a two-run double in the second after catcher Chris Cunningham was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Down 14-7 in the eighth and Anderson now pitching for the Wildcats, the Trojans tried to rally with the bases loaded after head coach Mike Gillespie was ejected for arguing on balls and strikes. Bill Peavey hit a two-run single to center followed by Kris Cox, who walked to load the bases again. Second baseman Anthony Lunetta hit a two-run single to right and Travis McAndrews added an RBI single, cutting the lead to 14-12. Anderson, however, struck out pinch hitter David Gordon with runners at first and third to end the inning.
Anderson led off the ninth with a solo shot to right center, his fifth of the season.
Wes Zlotoff entered in the ninth and retired all three Trojan batters for his second save.
The Trojans will host Pepperdine on Tuesday (April 30) at 5 p.m. at Dedeaux Field before a nine-day break for finals. The game will be broadcast live, along with Live Stats play-by-play, on www.usctrojans.com.
