Beavers Miss Out On Sweep

April 28, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State couldn't complete a sweep of its weekend series with fourth-ranked Stanford on Sunday afternoon, falling 13-0 in Pacific-10 baseball at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. A crowd of 1,476 saw the Cardinal salvage the series finale after the Beavers had won 3-1 on Friday and 4-3 on Saturday.

OSU (27-15 overall, 6-6 Pacific-10) has won eight of its last 11 games and 12 of its last 17; the Beavers are tied for fourth in the Pac-10 after taking their series from Stanford (29-12, 6-6). Oregon State plays at Washington State next weekend with games Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 12 noon; all three games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Sunday, the Beavers saw the Cardinal take a 1-0 first-inning lead it never relinquished. Stanford pushed its advantage to 4-0 in the third inning, added single runs in the fourth and fifth, and then broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning that made it 10-0.

'I wasn't disappointed with our effort,' said OSU head coach Pat Casey, whose team saw its postseason chances boosted by the series victory. 'What we needed going into this weekend was to win this series, and we did. Stanford is a great team and their guy (pitcher John Hudgins) was very good today; our guys weren't as good as they'd been the first two days. Stanford is a club that will take advantage of those opportunities, and we couldn't get anything going today.'

Hudgins limited the Beavers to four hits as he improved to 7-0 this season, walking three and striking out five. Beaver starter Mark McLemore, who had been gone at least five innings in five of his last six starts, was reached for four runs in his 2 2/3 innings of work Sunday.

Stanford got on the scoreboard on Ryan Garko's two-out, run-scoring double down the rightfield line in the first inning. The Beavers had a chance to even the score in the bottom of the first after Aaron Mathews singled and stole second; with two out, Brian Barden pulled a ball down the leftfield line that stayed aloft just long enough for Cardinal leftfielder Brian Hall to make a diving catch to end the inning.

The Stanford lead grew when Sam Fuld led off the top of the third inning with an infield single, then Chris O'Riordan followed with a homer to left-centerfield. With two out in the inning, back-to-back doubles by Andy Topham and Donny Lucy made it 4-0.

Mathews finished the day 2-for-4 for the Beavers, while Will Hudson and Seth Pietsch added the other hits. Pietsch's hit was a double down the leftfield line in the seventh inning, giving him 17 doubles on the season and tying him for sixth place on OSU's all-time list of season leaders; he's just two short of matching the school record.

Pietsch, who had two doubles and a home run in the series, has 27 extra-base hits among his 48 hits this season. He went into the week leading the Pac-10 in triples and tied for first in doubles.
