April 28, 2002
SAN DIEGO - California throwers Jennifer Joyce and Sheni Russell traveled to the UC San Diego Open meet looking to experience its famous throwing winds, and that's exactly what happened Friday and Saturday.
Both improved upon their NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the discus. Joyce, a senior, finished fifth with a distance of 178-3, only seven inches shy of the NCAA automatic mark and No. 2 on Cal's all-time chart. Her previous best was 164-7. Russell, a junior, placed eighth and upped her PR from 172-0 to 174-7. Suzy Powell of Asics claimed top honors in the discus (227-10).
Joyce, the Canadian record holder in the hammer, won the event for the sixth time this season with an NCAA automatic performance of 203-8. Russell placed 10th in 171-10.
Russell and Joyce next look to help Cal defeat Stanford in the annual Big Meet, May 4, at Edwards Stadium.
