Vlaski Falls in Finals of Pac-10 Conference Championships
April 28, 2002
OJAI, Ca. - Washington freshman Alex Vlaski (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) was defeated in the championship match of the annual Pac-10 tournament by junior and 48th-ranked UCLA Bruin, Rodrigo Grilli, 6-4, 6-3, Sunday afternoon at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif.
With his 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 defeat of Marcin Matkowski of UCLA in round four, Vlaski became only the third Husky in history to advance to the semifinals and the only player ever to make it to the championship finals.
'Alex struggled to hold serve, he was broken five times in the match, but was coming back in the end,' said eighth year head coach Matt Anger. 'He saved six match points before finally giving way to lose 6-3 in the second set.'
Vlaski finished the regular dual season with a 15-5 mark, and now owns an impressive 23-7 overall record. Through the competitive month of April, he has amassed an 8-2 finish, with seven of those wins coming over ranked opponents.
Next up, the 34th-ranked Huskies will await a bid on Thursday, May 2 for the NCAA Regionals, at a site to be determined, May 11-12. NCAA Championships will be held in College Station, Texas, May 18-27.
