No. 16 Softball Sweeps Double Header With Portland State, Again
April 29, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 16 ranked Oregon State softball squad swept its non-conference double-header with Portland State University on Monday afternoon, taking both games by a score of 2-0.
Oregon State pitcher Kristen Hunter held Portland State (19-32; 8-10 WAC) without a hit over the first four innings.
OSU added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth, capitalizing on three singles. Clare Burnum's two-out, bases loaded single to center field plated pinch runner Miranda Dellinger and put the Beavers in front, 2-0.
The Vikings reeled off all three of their hits in the game during the fifth inning but failed to score.
Hunter matched her season-high with eight strikeouts and recorded her ninth complete game of the season while improving to 12-6 on the year. Burnum finished 2-for-3 from the plate, including her Pac-10 leading 16th double of the season. Jenni Jodoin also finished with two hits in the contest.
Freshman Kathryn Neufeld made the start for the Beavers in the second game and threw well, allowing just two hits in four innings of work.
PSU hurler Megan Herscher kept OSU hitters at bay over the first four innings of the game but the Beaver bats came alive in the fifth.
Jodoin led-off the inning with an infield single and Oregon State took advantage of an intentional walk and two more singles to get on the scoreboard. Brynnen Guthrie's two-out RBI to center field gave the Beavers the lead. Prochaska followed with a sharp shot off of PSU third baseman Annie Peccia's foot that allowed Chariton to come across the plate.
'Offensively we had a couple of good clutch hitting performances,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'We would have liked to put more runners across the plate, but it was nice to get a lot of runners on base and have a lot of opportunities. Clare (Burnum), Brynnen (Guthrie) and Shelly (Prochaska) came up with some big hits.'
Senior Crystal Draper (13-5) became the first OSU pitcher to reach 13 wins on the season when she relieved Neufeld in the fifth. Draper allowed just one hit and struckout two in three innings.
'All three pitchers did a great job,' said Walker. 'They worked well together and kept the Portland State offense at bay.'
Prochaska finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate with a double and Jodoin has now hit safely in four-straight contests.
Oregon State returns to Pac-10 action on Friday when the Beavers host No. 8 University of Washington. First-pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the OSU Softball Complex.
