Cal Women To Host NCAA Regional; Men Travel to Duke
May 2, 2002
BERKELEY, Calif. - University of California's men's (18-6, 5-2) and women's (12-9, 3-5) tennis teams were selected to the NCAA tournament today. The men were seeded 10th in their 64-team draw, as the women were given the No. 15 seed.
The California women were also slated to host their regional bracket at Hellman Tennis Center next weekend (May 11-12). The Bears will face Brigham Young (10-13), Washington State (11-10) and Fresno State (15-5) in Berkeley. The victor of the four-team regional will then travel to the NCAA Championships at Stanford, May 16-19.
Even though the men were only seeded team in their regional, Duke University will play host to the tournament, taking advantage of a new NCAA rule which attempts to reduce the travel for as many schools as possible. As such, Cal will be challenging the University of Maryland Baltimore County in their first round, and the winner of that match will go on to face the winner of Duke (15-11) -- American University (Washington D.C.) (17-1). The NCAA Championships begin May 18 at Texas A & M University.
