Men's Tennis Opens NCAA Championship On Home Courts

STANFORD, Calif. - Sixth-ranked Stanford University will host first and second round matches of the NCAA Men's Tennis Team Championship on Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 12 at the Taube Tennis Center. The 64-team bracket, as well as the 64-player NCAA Singles Championship and 32-team NCAA Doubles Championship brackets, were announced on Thursday.
The Cardinal (19-5), which received the fifth seed in the 64-team field, will open its quest for an unprecedented 18th NCAA Men's Tennis Team Championship on Saturday, May 11 when it hosts unranked Sacramento State (12-10) at noon. In Saturday's other first round match, 32nd-ranked Tulane (18-7) will take on 35th-ranked Washington (17-6) at 9:00 a.m.
On Sunday, May 12, the winners of Saturday's first round matches will face off at noon. The winner of Sunday's second round match will advance to the final four rounds of the NCAA Championships at Texas A&M University from Saturday, May 18-Tuesday, May 21.
Stanford also advanced four players to the NCAA Singles Championship and two teams to the NCAA Doubles Championship. Those tournaments will take place at Texas A&M from Wednesday, May 22-Monday, May 27.
Second-ranked senior K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA), who advanced to the semifinals in 2000 and quarterfinals in 2001, leads Stanford's group of singles entrants. Junior David Martin (Tulsa, OK), who is ranked 28th in the nation, qualified for the NCAA Singles Championship for the second consecutive year, while 49th-ranked junior Ryan Haviland (Aiken, SC) and 51st-ranked junior Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY) will be making their first appearances.
On the doubles side, the second-ranked duo of Lipsky and Martin and the 31st-ranked team of Haviland and Hippensteel will represent Stanford. Lipsky and Martin advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship last year in Athens, Georgia, while Hippensteel won the NCAA Doubles Championship as a freshman in 1999 with Ryan Wolters.
