Stanford Opens Defense Of NCAA Championship On The Farm

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford University will begin defense of its NCAA Women's Tennis Team Championship on Friday, May 10 against Sacramento State at the Taube Tennis Center. The 64-team bracket, as well as the 64-player NCAA Singles Championship and 32-team NCAA Doubles Championship brackets, were announced on Thursday.
The Cardinal (21-1), which is ranked second in the nation and seeded third in the 64-team NCAA Women's Tennis Championships, will take on the unranked Hornets (20-3) on Friday, May 10 at 2:00 p.m. In the other first round match on The Farm, 36th-ranked Pepperdine (12-13) will face 64th-ranked Long Beach State (21-2) at 10 a.m.
The winners of Friday's first round matches will face off on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in second round action. The winner of Saturday's second round match will return to the Taube Tennis Center for the final four rounds of the NCAA Team Championships from Thursday, May 16-Sunday, May 19.
Stanford will also play host to the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships from Monday, May 20-Saturday, May 25. The Cardinal was awarded four entries into the singles bracket and two entries into the doubles bracket.
The Cardinal will be represented in the 64-player singles bracket by seniors Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL) and Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV), sophomore Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ) and freshman Erin Burdette (Jackson, GA). Kalvaria, who is ranked fourth in the nation, reached the final of the 2001 NCAA Singles Championship before falling to teammate Laura Granville. Lastra, who won the Pac-10 Singles Championship last weekend, is ranked sixth in the country while Burdette and Barnikow are ranked12th and 16th in the nation, respectively.
In the 32-team doubles bracket, the Cardinal teams of Kalvaria and Lastra and Barnikow and Burdette were both invited to participate. Kalavria and Lastra are the top-ranked team in the nation, while Barnikow and Burdette are ranked 14th.
