May 2, 2002
TUCSON, Ariz.-The University of Arizona's women's golf team has been named the top seed for the NCAA West Regional, scheduled to take place May 9-11 at Palo Alto, Calif.
Last season, Arizona finished first at the NCAA West Regional held at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore. The Wildcats posted a three-round total of 4-over-par 868, 20 strokes better than second-place finisher Stanford. Arizona claimed the top two spots, with the duo of Natalie Gulbis and Lorena Ochoa finishing in first and second places.
Following two-time defending West Regional champion Arizona in the seedings are six other Pac-10 Conference teams.
In the nine-year history of the NCAA Regionals, Arizona has won the tournament four times and finished second twice. The Wildcats have not finished lower than second since 1995 when they took eighth place.
The NCAA West Regional will take place May 9-11 at the Stanford Golf Course. Eight teams and two individuals from each region will advance to the NCAA Championships.
