Beavers Blast Cougars 18-1

May 3, 2002

PULLMAN, Wash. - Andy Jarvis homered twice and drove in eight runs as Oregon State beat Washington State 18-1 in Pacific-10 baseball Friday evening at Bailey-Brayton Field. Ben Rowe scattered nine hits to pitch his second straight complete game for the Beavers (28-15 overall, 7-6 Pacific-10), who have won nine of their last 12.

OSU and WSU (18-25, 4-12) continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m. and conclude it Sunday at 12 noon. Both games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

Friday's win was the third straight in a Pac-10 series opener for Oregon State.

'That's a change from the last few years,' said Jarvis, who had a two-run homer in the sixth inning and a grand slam in OSU's eight-run ninth. 'We'd lose the first one, then be scrambling the rest of the weekend. This gives us some momentum.'

The Beavers jumped in front 3-0 in the first inning on a run-scoring double by Brian Barden and a two-run single by Jarvis, then widened the lead from there. Chris Biles added a two-out, three-run double in the second inning and Aaron Mathews singled home a run in the third to make it 7-0.

'It's great to win on a Friday and it's great to win on the road,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'I hope we can come out with the same intensity on Saturday. It all starts on the mound, and we got some great pitching out of Ben Rowe again. He shut them down and gave us a chance to come up with some runs.'

A week after four-hitting nationally-ranked Stanford, Rowe walked one and struck out two to beat the Cougars with a 91-pitch outing. In his last 20 innings of work, Rowe has allowed just two runs.

'He's so much more confident out there right now,' Jarvis said of the sophomore righthander, who improved his record to 7-3 this season. 'He's throwing anything he wants to. Before, he'd been a little tentative, but the last two weeks he's pitched to his talent and he's a very talented pitcher.'

The Beavers helped Rowe hold the Cougars' offense in check by turning four double plays, and third baseman Barden started one in the bottom of the seventh with an outstanding play. Guarding against a bunt, Barden had to go back and to his right to backhand a shot off the bat of Tyson Boston; he spun and threw to second baseman Tom Creighton for the first out and Creighton's speedy turn nipped Boston.

OSU's bats did the rest, knocking out 16 hits against a trio of WSU pitchers and taking advantage of five walks and six hit batters.

Jarvis' eight RBIs were one short of the school single-game record set when Ken Bowen drove in nine runs against Chico State in 1985. He was the first Beaver to have a multi-homer game since he'd done it against Washington State on March 11, 2001. Jarvis and Seth Pietsch had back-to-back homers in the ninth inning, the first time the Beavers have done that since Jarvis and Josh Howard managed it against the Cougars on April 20, 2001.

'Whenever we play Washington State or Washington, I hold a grudge a little bit,' said Jarvis, a native of Renton. 'Not necessarily because I would have gone there, but it's my home state, I was a fan of theirs when I was a kid ... I just turn it up a notch against them.'

Mathews had the first four-hit game of his career, going 4-for-6 with a double and two RBIs; the centerfielder also made a diving catch in left-centerfield of a fly hit by Jon Baeder to cut off a Cougar rally with the score still only 6-0 in the bottom of the second.

Barden was 2-for-4, and his two-run double gave him sole possession of second place on OSU's all-time RBI list with 146, trailing only the 169 that Joe Gerber drove in from 1997-2000. Wick Udy and Creighton were both 2-for-5, and Udy and Will Hudson both doubled.
