Stacey Nuveman Breaks NCAA Career Home Record as UCLA Wins 10-1
May 4, 2002
CORVALLIS, OR - UCLA senior catcher Stacey Nuveman became the NCAA's all-time leader in career home runs on Saturday afternoon, hitting the 86th home run of her stellar Bruin career in the top of the seventh inning. Nuveman's lead-off shot cleared the left field fence, and gave UCLA a 6-0 lead. UCLA went on to defeat Oregon State 10-1. The Bruins are now 46-6 (14-3 Pac-10), while Oregon State falls to 38-19 (7-10 Pac-10).
UCLA started the scoring in the top of the first inning, posting one run on consecutive doubles by Amanda Freed, Tairia Mims and Stacey Nuveman. Freed scored on Mims' double, while Mims stopped at third base on Nuveman's hit, as the Oregon State left fielder was closing on the ball before hit hit the outfield fence.
Mims added three more RBI to her total in the second inning, posting a three-run home run, her 10th of the season, clearing the left field fence after a two-out single by Natasha Watley and a walk to Freed.
Nuveman was the lead-off batter in the top of the seventh inning, and put the first pitch she saw from OSU pitcher Kristen Hunter over the left field fence, just below the scoreboard at the OSU Softball Complex. It was the 16th home run of the season for Nuveman, and the 86th of her UCLA career, giving her sole possession of the NCAA career home run record and surpassing the total set by Arizona's Leah Braatz and Laura Espinoza (85). Eight of her 16 home runs this season have come in Pac-10 play.
The Bruin offense caught fire after Nuveman's record-breaking home run, pounding out five more hits, including the second home run of the season for senior Crissy Buck, and scoring four additional runs. UCLA would hold a 10-0 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh inning, when a walk, a fielders choice and an RBI double by pinch-hitter Brynnen Guthrie, scored Kelly Peterson from first base, giving the Beavers their first run of the game.
The Beavers and Bruins take to the field again on Sunday with a 1 pm scheduled first pitch.
