Track And Field Teams Fall To UCLA In Dual Meet
May 4, 2002
Westwood, Calif. - The No. 4 UCLA women's track and field team defeated the No. 1 Women of Troy, 111-92, while the No. 18 UCLA men beat No. 22 USC, 121-81, in dual meet competition before a crowd of 8,094 at UCLA's Drake Stadium on Saturday.
It's the 10th consecutive dual meet win for the UCLA women over USC, who now trail the overall series, 16-3. On the men's side, USC now leads UCLA 39-30.
For the first time, the meet was scored 5-3-2-1 for the top four spots in an event as opposed to the traditional 5-3-1, with only two scorers per team allowed for each event.
The Women of Troy got wins from senior Angela Williams in the 100 meters (11.30) and 200 meters (23.56), sophomore Inga Stasiulionyte in the javelin (181-5), senior Tatyana Obukhova in the triple jump (personal-best 43-5 1/4), senior Natasha Neal in the 100-meter hurdles (13.47), senior Disia Page in the long jump (pesonal-best 20-3 3/4) and by the 400-meter relay squad of Williams, Page, Neal and senior Kinshasa Davis (nation-lead-tying 43.71).
However, those performances were not enough to offset an outstanding meet by the Bruins, who pulled off key wins in the hammer, shot put, 400 meters, 800 meters, 400-meter hurdles and 1600-meter relay to capture the meet.
For the Trojan men, wins came from junior Jeff Ryan in the pole vault (16-10 1/2), sophomore Dawid Jaworski in the high jump (6-10 1/4), junior Julien Kapek in the triple jump (54-9 1/2), sophomore Brandon Matlock in the 400 meters (47.68) and the 400-meter relay squad of Darrell Rideaux, Sultan McCullough, Devon Ward and Wes Felix in a season-best and NCAA provisional 39.68.
The UCLA men dominated the throws (31-13) and the distances (31-13) to provide most of their margin of victory.
The Trojan track and field teams are next in action at the Pac-10 Championships in Pullman, Wash. The multi-event portion of the meet will take place on May 11-12, while the main meet will take place on May 18-19.
