Beavers Outlast Cougars, 22-21

May 5, 2002

PULLMAN, Wash. - Oregon State rallied from a seven-run deficit, then clung to the remains of what had been an eight-run lead to beat Washington State 22-21 in Pacific-10 baseball Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field. The Beavers (30-15 overall, 9-6 Pacific-10) completed a series sweep with the 4-hour, 27-minute victory on a cold, windy, sometimes-damp day.

OSU, which has won 11 of its last 14 games, goes to California next weekend for games Friday at 2:30 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

The Beavers will go into that series after one of the wildest games in the 93-year, 389-game history of baseball battles between the schools. WSU (18-27, 4-14) scored four unearned runs in the ninth and had the tying and winning runs on base when the game ended; the teams combined for 41 hits, including 14 doubles and eight home runs, and committed 10 errors.

'That's one of the most grueling days I've ever spent as a player or coach,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'I don't think I've ever seen conditions that challenging ... it wasn't always perfect baseball, but it was a great game between two teams that just wouldn't give in. We had chances to roll over when we got down early; they had chances to roll over after we got a pretty good-sized lead later on. But that was an absolute scrap to the finish by everybody out there, and we got what we needed - a win.'

OSU trailed 9-2 after the Cougars scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Beavers immediately came back with seven runs in the top of the sixth to tie the score. Aaron Mathews first career homer - a grand slam - keyed the inning, getting the Beavers within 9-8, then Jason McBride's two-out single up the middle plated the tying run.

The Beavers grabbed the lead in the seventh when Paul Richie's first homer of the season made it 10-9, and OSU added three more runs in the inning. That included two when Brian Barden hit an infield single, then advanced to second on a throwing error that allowed Tom Creighton to score; Barden broke for third when he saw the Cougars weren't paying him much attention and then scored when the throw to third was wild.

OSU extended the lead to 20-12 with another seven-run inning in the eighth, getting a solo homer by McBride and two-run doubles by Barden and Seth Pietsch. WSU rallied with five runs in the bottom of the eighth, and Oregon State tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth to make it 22-17.

But a Beaver error to start the inning gave WSU life, and the Cougars took advantage to score four times; a two-out error then put the winning run on base and moved the tying run to second. OSU closer Jared Sanders finally induced a grounder that shortstop Will Hudson snared and tossed to second baseman Creighton covering the bag for the final out.
