May 5, 2002
TEMPE, Ariz. - Behind a 17-hit barrage, the most hits in two years, fourth-ranked Arizona State (39-15, 9-8 Pac-10) defeated No. 5 California (45-18, 9-8 Pac-10), 8-4, Saturday night at Farrington Stadium. After losing to Arizona the night before due to the offense's inability to come through with timely hits, the pitching hurt the Golden Bears tonight as the Devils raked in eight runs, including a five-run outburst in the second inning.
Arizona State and California traded single runs in the first inning as ASU scored its run on a solo home run from Missy Hixon, while senior Candace Harper doubled to score junior Kristen Morley. Cal went ahead again, 2-1, in the second when Morely singled in Kristen Bayless.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Sun Devils would never trail again as ASU's Erin Wardein started with a walk. After one out, Kristin Farber laid down a bunt for a single, moving Wardein to second. Amber Turner then replaced Wardein as a pinch runner. Brun and Turner then advanced to second and third on a wild pitch by starting pitcher Jen Deering. Nichole Thompson singled to left to drive in both runners.
Senior Jocelyn Forest, replaced Deering after Thompson's hit, but gave up back to back home runs to Kara Brun and Phelan Wright. Forest was then lifted for freshman Cassie Bobrow, who was assigned mop up duties for the second consecutive night.
Cal would get one more back in the third, when junior Chelsea Spencer singled in pinch runner junior Roni Rodrigues from third, and one more in the fifth as Jessica Pamanian singled in Harper, to cut the lead to 6-4.
Morley, Harper and Nelson each had two hits to lead Cal. Thompson, Brun, Wright and Beach each had three hits to pace the Sun Devils.
Beach (26-12) went the distance, giving up 11 hits and three earned runs. Deering (12-3) took the loss, scattering six hits and four earned runs.
The two teams conclude the season series as they meet for a final time on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Farrington Stadium.
