May 6, 2002
EUGENE, Ore. - University of Oregon women's tennis senior Janice Nyland received the Regional ITA Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship and will be one of eight candidates nationwide in contention for the top honor.
The award is annually given to a junior or senior player who has demonstrated inspiring commitment and dedication to her team and has exemplified the spirit of intercollegiate tennis.
'Janice has such a big impact on our team,' Oregon coach Jack Griffin said. 'Now she's being recognized nationally for that for how she carries herself along with her incredible sportsmanship and character.'
Nyland, ranked No. 112 in singles by the ITA, owns a 17-14 record this season, primarily playing at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots. A native of Davis, Calif., she was voted as the team's Most Inspirational player last season. This year, Nyland, the team's co-captain, has helped the Ducks to a 13-10 record and their third NCAA Tournament berth in the last four years.
The National Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship will be presented to one of the eight finalists at the NCAA Championships May 17-25 at Atlanta, Ga.
