Huskies' Hill is Pac-10 Track Athlete of the Week
May 3, 2002
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington senior Mike Hill has been named the Pac-10 Conference's Track Athlete of the Week for the week ending Apr. 29, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Friday.
Hill, the Pac-10's top-ranked competitor in the steeplechase, earned his fourth victory of the 2002 season last weekend at the prestigious Drake Relays. Hill overcame blustery weather conditions and an outstanding field to finish the race in 8:54.38, two seconds ahead of second-place finisher Isaiah Festa of Wisconsin.
A 1997 graduate of Bellevue (Wash.) High School, Hill placed eighth at the Pac-10 championships in 2000, and was among the leaders in 2001 before striking his knee on a barrier.
Hill boasts the nation's 12th-fastest mark in 2002, having completed the steeplechase at the Mar. 30 Stanford Invitational in 8:46.92, just seconds off the all-time school record.
Hill becomes the second Husky to earn the conference honor in the past three weeks. Sophomore Eric Garner was named the Pac-10's track athlete of the week on Apr. 16.
