May 7, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
Oregon State men's golfer David Yarnes has been selected as one of six individuals to join the 27-team field at the NCAA West Regional Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., from May 16-18.
The University of New Mexico hosts the tournament at the par-72 Championship Course.
Yarnes, a member of last year's team that tied for 12th at the NCAA Championships, finished 33rd or better in all but one tournament this year. He finished the regular season with two seventh place finishes, including a tie for seventh at the Pac-10 Championships.
The senior from Tucson, Ariz., led the Beavers in scoring with a 73.45 average.
Yarnes tied for 19th at last year's NCAA West Regional at OSU's Trysting Tree Golf Club, sinking crucial putts down the stretch in the final round to help the Beavers advance to the national championships.
Yarnes went on to tie for 59th at NCAAs.
Teams will play 18 holes each day for a total of 54. The top 10 teams qualify for the NCAA Championships, and the top two individuals not on qualifying teams will advance as well. A total of 141 players will compete.
