WSU Ends Home Schedule With LCSC

The Washington State baseball team goes out of conference this weekend, taking on Lewis-Clark State in a three-game series beginning Saturday at 6 p.m. at Bailey-Brayton Field.
WSU enters the week at 18-27 overall and 4-14 in the Pacific-10. The Cougars went 1-3 last week, defeating Gonzaga 12-9 Wednesday, before being swept by Oregon State over the weekend.
Several Cougars' had solid series against the Beavers, led by the play of junior first baseman Steve Mortimer.
Playing Saturday and Sunday, Mortimer was 4-for-8 with two home runs and 11 RBI. He hit a grand slam in a 10-6 loss Saturday and hit a two-run home run and drove in seven runs in a 22-21 loss Sunday.
Junior third baseman Jeff LaRue was 6-for-13, hitting two home runs Sunday and driving in five runs. LaRue leads the team with a .382 batting average.
Senior second baseman Bookie Gates was 5-for-10 and upped his average to .366.
Freshman shortstop Derek Bruce hit his team-leading eighth and ninth home runs of the season. Bruce had a solo home run in an 18-1 loss Friday and a two-run home run Sunday.
This weekend, the Cougars will complete their season series against LCSC. The Warriors, No. 10 in this week's national NAIA poll, will visit Bailey-Brayton Field for games Saturday and Sunday. The series concludes Monday night at Harris Field in Lewiston.
The Cougars defeated the Warriors 7-2 in the first meeting of the season, April 23.
LCSC played one game last week, defeating Central Washington 28-11 Wednesday in Ellensburg.
WSU returns to Pac-10 action next week with a three-game set at Arizona, beginning Friday, May 17 at 7 p.m.
