Cougars 14th After Day One Of NCAA West Regional

STANFORD, Calif. - The Washington State women's golf team is in 14th place after the opening round of the NCAA West Regional at the par 72, 6,218 yard Stanford Golf Course, Thursday.
The Cougars posted a 317 after the first day's action and are two shots back of Colorado State and San Francisco for 12th place and three strokes shy of Idaho for 11th position. Pepperdine is setting the pace in the 21-team field after recording a 289 to lead second place UCLA by seven shots.
Senior Tasha Browner is tied for 26th in the 107-player field after carding a four-over 76. Browner was consistent throughout her opening round, shooting identical 38's on the front and back nines.
Freshman Jay-Lee Longbottom is tied for 52nd after shooting a 79 (+7). Longbottom's freshman teammate, Kim Welch, is tied for 63rd after posting an eight-over 80. Senior Jackie Stevens turned in a round of 82 (+10) while junior Donna Bell shot an 87 (+15) to round out the Cougar roster.
Pepperdine's Katherine Hull is the first round leader after carding a three-under 69. Hull is one stroke ahead of New Mexico's Kristi Larson and Arizona's Lorena Ochoa heading into the Friday's second round.
The top eight teams and two individuals will advance from the regional to the national championships, which will be held at Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash, May 21-24.
