No. 17 Cal In Third After Opening Round of NCAA West Regional

STANFORD, Calif. - No. 17 California is in third place with a team score of 297 after the opening round of the NCAA West Regional Thursday at Stanford Golf Course. The Golden Bears are eight shots behind No. 15 Pepperdine (289) and one shot behind No. 19 UCLA (296).
The top eight of the 21 teams in the 54-hole regional advance to the NCAA Championship, May 21-24, in Auburn Wash. Cal is making its third-straight regional appearance and looks to advance to the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row.
No. 8 Arizona is fourth at 299, and No. 24 New Mexico is third at 302.
Sophomore Claire Dury, who is playing in Cal's No. 5 spot, led the Bears with an opening round of 73 and finds herself in a tie for ninth. Junior Ria Quiazon was Cal's next best golfer with a 74 and is tied for 13th.
Each Cal golfer shot at least three birdies on the day, with sophomore Sarah Huarte leading the way with five. Huarte finished the day in a tie for 17th with a 75. Junior Vikki Laing also carded a 75, and senior Anne Walker opened with a 78 (tied for 42nd).
Pepperdine's Katherine Hull holds a one-shot lead in the individual race after firing a three-under 69. New Mexico's Kristi Larson and Arizona's Lorena Ochoa are one-shot off the pace with opening rounds of 70. Pepperdine's Lindsey Wright earned a share of fourth with a 71.
Cal begins the second round Friday at 11:50 a.m. from the first tee.
