Cal Baseball Tops Oregon State, 13-7

BERKELEY, CA - The Cal baseball team broke a seven-game losing streak with a 13-7 victory over Oregon State Friday at Evans Diamond. The Bears pounded out 11 hits, including a three-run homer by David Weiner and a grand slam by John Baker, to improve to 27-26 overall and 9-13 in the Pac-10, while the Beavers fall to 30-16 and 9-7 in conference. OSU left 11 runners on base.
Cal scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning off of Beaver starter Ben Rowe (7-4, 4.0 innings, five hits, six earned runs, four walks, one strikeout), with the big hit being a three-run homer by Weiner, and never looked back. OSU got within 4-2 when Seth Pietsch hit a two-run homer off of Bear freshman starter Joe Todoroff (2.0 innings, two hits, two runs, three walks) in the second inning. Tom Creighton had a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning off of Cal's winning pitcher, freshman Travis Talbott (1-0, career-high 6.0 innings, six hits, one earned run, five walks, two strikeouts) to make the score, 4-3.
But the Bears took control of the contest by scoring two runs in the fourth on an RBI ground out by Nick Medrano and a fielding error by Beaver first baseman Andy Jarvis allowed another run to score. Cal added three more runs in fifth on a wild pitch and RBI ground outs by Chris Grossman and Justin Nelson. In the bottom of the sixth the Bears tacked on four more runs on junior catcher John Baker's first career grand slam.
Oregon State kept competitive in the game by scoring a run in the fifth on an RBI double by Pietsch. The Beavers and a run in the seventh on a solo home run by Brian Barden and two runs in the ninth on a solo home run by pinch hitter Pat Stevens and an RBI ground out by Jake Postlewait.
Baker led the Bears at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a grand slam and five RBI. Carson White and Conor Jackson added two hits apiece for Cal. Pietsch was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run and three RBI for the Beavers.
The Bears will next play Oregon State in the second game of the three-game Pac-10 series, Saturday, May 11 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
Oregon State: Pietsch, two-run home run in the second inning. Barden, solo home run in the seventh inning. Stevens, solo home run in the ninth inning.
Cal: Weiner, three-run home run in the first inning. Baker, grand slam in the sixth inning.
