Cal's Raquel Kops-Jones and Christina Fusano, playing for the first time since winning the Pac-10 championship two weeks ago, got things started for the Bears, defeating Dominique Reynolds and Brooke Beverley, 8-4 at the top doubles court. After Carla Arguelles and Nicole Havlicek clinched the point for Cal, the Bears moved onto singles, winning all three of its completed matches in straight sets. Kops-Jones and Fusano, who did not finish their matches, both went down 1-5 in their first sets and both roared back into the match. Sophomore Kristen Case saw her first ever post-season action on court six.
Fresno State took two of the three doubles matches, with Chantel Wiggins and Courtney Jantz dropping Nora Gaal and Zorana Roganovic, 8-6 to clinch the point, giving the Bulldogs the momentum over the Cougars heading into singles. Wiggins, who also clinched the match for FSU, rallied after dropping the first set, 2-6, to throttle Gaal 6-0, 6-1 in the second and third sets. Likewise, Kim Niggemeyer had problems getting past Erica Perkins in the first set, ultimately defeating the Cougar, 7-6(3) in a tiebreak set. Niggemeyer blew past Perkins, 6-1, in the second stanza.
