May 10, 2002
PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 8 ranked Stanford Cardinal used a pair of unearned runs to beat No. 15 Oregon State, 2-1 in Friday night's Pacific-10 Conference softball action.
With the loss, Oregon State falls to 38-21 on the season and 7-12 in the Pac-10 while Stanford improves to 42-17 and 6-13 in conference action.
Both pitchers dominated the contest from the start. The Cardinal picked up the first hit of the contest when Cassi Brangham singled to leadoff the second inning but OSU pitcher Crystal Draper proceeded to strikeout the side to end any threat.
The Beavers earned their first baserunner of the contest in the fourth inning, when second baseman Brynnen Guthrie beat-out an infield single to shortstop. Shelly Prochaska followed with a shot down the left field line but Stanford pitcher Tori Nyberg struckout Traci Feldt to end the inning.
Stanford took the lead in the bottom half of the fourth as Sarah Beeson reached second base after a high fly ball was misplayed in the outfield. Kira Ching followed with a double to the left-center field gap that scored pinch runner Heather Shook. Draper forced the next two Cardinal batters to fly-out and Feldt ended the inning when she threw-out Ching attempting to steal third.
OSU knotted things up in a wild fifth inning. Jessica King reached base with a walk and Alana Mendoza reached with a one-out single to shallow left. Kelly Petersen drew a walk to load the bases, sending Clare Burnum to the plate. Burnum belted a deep fly ball to left field that scored King but Mendoza was thrown out while trying to advance to third.
The Cardinal added its second unearned run of the game, which proved to be the game-winner, in the bottom half of the inning when Jessica Draemel reached on a two-out error and proceeded to steal second base, setting up an RBI double to left field by Robin Walker.
OSU reeled off back-to-back two-out singles in the sixth inning when Prochaska and Feldt each tallied hits, but the Beavers were unable to capitalize.
Draper (13-7) pitched extremely well, striking out nine, while allowing just four hits and not giving up an earned run. Prochaska finished with a 2-for-3 effort from the plate.
