No. 5 California Comes Back to Beat Oregon, 3-2
May 10, 2002
BERKELEY - After spotting Oregon a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, No. 5 California (46-19, 10-9 Pac-10) came back, scoring all three of its runs in the fourth inning to hold on for a 3-2 win Friday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field.
The Ducks (23-29, 1-18 Pac-10) came charging out, as Alyssa Laux led off with a double to left center. Laux then advanced to third on freshman Kelly Anderson's wild pitch. Oregon then used a squeeze bunt to score Laux. Anderson walked the next two batters after Andrea Vidlund's bunt to load the bases. Ashley Richards followed with a bloop single to left that scored Vidlund. Anderson struck out Janell Bergstrom and forced Erin Goodell to grounded out to end the threat.
Senior Candace Harper ignited Cal's comeback trail. The third baseman led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer, her eighth of the year, to right center field. After Veronica Nelson's pop up, junior Courtney Scott smacked a sharp liner up the middle. Freshman Jessica Pamanian, then blasted the eventual game-winning hit, her third homerun of the year, over the left field fence to give the Bears the 3-2 edge.
With the exception of the first and fourth innings, neither team could muster up any offense. Other than the fourth frame, the Bears scattered three other hits, while Oregon collected just two more hits of its own after freshman Cassie Bobrow came in too relieve Anderson in the second inning.
Bobrow gave up one hit in 4.1 innings of work and collected her seventh win of the season against just one loss. Connie McMurren, the Ducks starting pitcher, was chased by Pamanian's two-run job. Anissa Meashintubby finished the game for OU, striking out four batters in 2.2 innings.
Cal concludes the regular season tomorrow as it hosts a doubleheader against No. 15 Oregon State. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. at Levine-Fricke Field.
