May 10, 2002
LOS ANGELES - Junior Anthony Reyes (Whittier/California HS) allowed only one run in eight innings Friday and the No. 20 USC Trojans defeated the Washington Huskies, 4-1, in Pac-10 Conference action at Dedeaux Field. With the win, the Trojans remain in first place in the Pac-10, two games ahead of the Huskies and the Stanford Cardinal, who defeated Arizona State (5-3).
Sophomore Jon Brewster snapped a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning with a two-run double off the wall in center for the Trojans.
USC improves to 29-18 overall and 12-4 in conference play while Washington falls to 24-21-1 overall and 10-6 in the Pac-10.
The Trojans were on the first base side for the first time since the late 1980s after the $4 million renovation project at Dedeaux Field was completed this week. The team made the switch with a new locker room as one of the centerpieces for the project.
Reyes allowed six hits and struck out eight without allowing a walk to improve to 4-0 on the season for the Trojans while Cory Campos registered his fourth save of the season with one inning of relief. Shawn Kohn (9-4) took the loss for the Huskies, throwing a complete game and allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Washington scored a run in the sixth on an RBI single by first baseman Kyle Larsen.
Metropoulos answered with a leadoff bunt single down the third base line in the sixth. He was retired at second on a fielder's choice groundout by Anthony Lunetta. Lunetta then advanced to second on an infield single by right fielder David Gordon. Michael Morales fouled out for the second out before Brewster hit his two-run double on the first pitch by Kohn.
The Trojans will continue their series with the Huskies tomorrow at 3 p.m. with the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live, along with Live Stats play-by-play, on www.usctrojans.com.
