Arizona Softball Drops Two Games to Huskies

TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 2 Arizona softball team fell to the No. 6 Washington Huskies in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Washington won the first game 3-1 and was victorious in the second game over UA pitcher Jennie Finch, 3-2.
In game one, Washington jumped on top early Becky Simpson singled and advanced to second on a single by Rita Roach. A wild pitch from Gladding pushed both runners up one base. UW's Kristen Rivera singled to left field, bringing in Becky Simpson from third base.
The Wildcats countered with a run in the top of the third inning to tie the game 1-1. UA's Finch doubled to right center scoring freshman Courtney Fossatti from second base. Fossatti had singled and reached second base on a wild pitch by UW's Leslie Scott.
Washington didn't wait long to take the lead again, driving home two more runs in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, UW's Kathy Fiske doubled off Gladding, bringing in two runs to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Huskies.
Arizona threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning when freshman Crystal Farley singled and advanced to second on a single by UA shortstop Lovie Jung. Fossatti popped up to the third baseman to end the threat and the game.
Fossatti led Arizona at the plate, collecting three hits and scoring the Wildcats only run. Gladding pitched the entire game allowing seven hits, striking out eight and walking two. Gladding fell to 19-6 on the season.
In game two, Washington again jumped on the scoreboard early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Washington's Jaime Clark and Rita Roach scored on Amanda Oleson's triple to right center with one out in the inning. Roach reached base when she was hit by UA pitcher Jennie Finch. Clark reached on a fielder's choice and both runners advanced one base on a throwing error by UA's Jackie Coburn. UW's Oleson scored as UA shortstop Lovie Jung bobbled Kathy Fiske's hit. All three runs of the inning were unearned.
Arizona countered in the top of the third inning as freshman Courtney Fossatti walked with one out in the inning and scored as freshman Leneah Manuma jacked her 20th homerun of the season off of UW's Ashley Boek.
Both teams would be shut down until the seventh inning as Arizona attempted to tie the game. With two outs and runners on second and third base, Manuma hit a weak grounder to the pitcher to end the game.
Finch's record fell to 29-4 on the season. She pitched six innings and allowed four hits, striking out 10. All three runs that Finch allowed were unearned.Arizona falls to 48-10 overall, 15-6 in the Pac-10 with the two losses. No. 6 Washington improves to 44-16 overall, 13-8 in the Pac-10.
