Cal Has Strong Showing at Modesto Relays
May 11, 2002
MODESTO, Calif. - The California track and field team performed admirably at the 61st-annual Modesto Relays Saturday at Modesto Junior College. This was a difficult task given that Tom Moore, the founder of the Modesto Relays, a Cal track and field alum and a loyal supporter of the Golden Bears, passed away a day earlier. He was 88.
There are no words to describe how much Tom Moore, a former world record holder in the 120-yard hurdles, has meant to Cal and to the sport of track and field.
Cal did what it could to utilize its final preparation for next week's Pac-10 Championships.
The top performance from the Cal women came from sophomore Deanna Slaton, who finished third in the invitational 400mH with a PR of 59.80. Junior Sheni Russell had a strong showing in the invitational discus. She placed fourth with an NCAA provisional mark of 173-0.
