Lorena Ochoa Wins Eighth Title of Season as Arizona Qualifies for NCAA Championships
May 11, 2002
PALO ALTO, Calif.-Arizona's Lorena Ochoa began a new streak of victories Saturday as she took medalist honors at the NCAA Women's Golf West Regional and helped Arizona qualify for the NCAA Championships later this month. Ochoa notched her third straight round of 70 (-2) at the Stanford Golf Course to close the tournament at 6-under-par 210, five strokes ahead of second-place finishers Katherine Hull of Pepperdine and Mikaela Parmlid of Southern California.
As a team, the Wildcats finished in fourth place at 26-over 890 after a final round of 291 (+3). Pepperdine and UCLA shared the top team spot as both squads finished at 19-over-par 883. California took third, while Stanford rounded out the top five. The top eight teams and two individuals from each of the three NCAA Regional tournaments will advance to the NCAA Championships in Auburn, Wash. All told, seven Pac-10 teams qualified from the West Region.
'We accomplished our goal of qualifying for the NCAA Championships and that's the most important thing about the regional tournament, ' said head coach Greg Allen. 'We wish we could have played a little better, but we were able to gain some momentum with our performance today.'
By winning the individual championship, Ochoa has now won eight tournaments in her sophomore season. Perhaps more impressive than her mark of eight individual championships is her average margin of victory. In her eight victories, the sophomore from Guadalajara, Mexico, has won by an average of five strokes. In six career rounds at the Stanford Golf Course, Ochoa is a combined nine strokes under par.
For the second consecutive day, Arizona received subpar scores from two golfers-only the third time the team has accomplished the feat this season. Freshman Mar Garcia rebounded from her second-round of 83 to shoot a final-round score of 1-under-par 71. The subpar mark is Garcia's best since her collegiate debut in the Wildcat Invitational where she carded a third-round 70. The native of Castellon, Spain, and younger sister of PGA star Sergio Garcia finished tied for 45th at 17-over for the tournament.
Senior Cristina Baena continued to add stability and consistency to the Wildcat lineup as she wrapped up the tournament tied for 15th. She used a final-round score of 4-over-par 76 to post a 54-hole total of 223 (+7). Tying for 15th is Baena's career-best finish at the NCAA Regionals, she has shared 19th, 34th and 25th places.
Another bright spot for the Arizona squad was the final-round performance of Miriam Kraschinski. The freshman from New Zealand posted a career-low round as she finished the tournament with a 2-over 74. Kraschinski tied for 43rd place at 16-over-par 232. Junior Laura Myerscough shot 7-over 79 Saturday to finish the tournament tied for 45th place at 17-over-par.
The Wildcats next head to Washington National Golf Course in Auburn, Wash., on May 21-24 for the NCAA Championships. The 2002 national championship tournament marks the eighth consecutive year Arizona has qualified. Arizona has won two women's golf national championships, in 1996 and 2000. Last year, the Wildcats finished in eighth place at the 2001 NCAA Championship tournament held in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. Lorena Ochoa tied for the individual championship after the regulation 72 holes, but fell in a sudden-death playoff.
