Stanford Rolls Over Sacramento State, 4-0

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford University opened the 2002 NCAA Men's Tennis Team Championships with an easy 4-0 win over visiting Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center. The Cardinal, which is the fifth seed in the tournament and ranked sixth in the country, improved to 20-5 while the unranked and No. 49-64 seed Hornets concluded their season at 12-11.

The Cardinal will face Pacific-10 Conference rival Washington (18-6) in the second round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Team Championship on Sunday at noon at the Taube Tennis Center. The 35th-ranked Huskies, who are a No. 33-48 seed, defeated 32nd-ranked and No. 17-32 seed Tulane (18-8) 4-2 on Saturday morning.

The meeting will be the second of the season between Stanford and Washington. The Cardinal defeated the Huskies 6-1 in Pac-10 action on March 30 at the Taube Tennis Center. The winner of Sunday's match will advance to the round of 16 on Saturday, May 18 at Texas A&M University.

Stanford dropped just five games in doubles competition to capture the first point of the dual. The Cardinal clinched the point at No. 2 doubles thanks to an 8-3 victory from junior Ryan Haviland (Aiken, SC) and freshman Sam Warburg (Sacramento, CA).The Cardinal then posted three straight set singles wins to lock up its 20th victory of the season.

Warburg rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles, while sophomore Joe Kao (Fullerton, CA) extended the lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6. Cardinal junior David Martin (Tulsa, OK), who is ranked 28th in the nation, gave Stanford its fourth and deciding point with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1.

'I was real proud of the way the bottom of our lineup performed today,' Stanford head coach Dick Gould said. 'This was a nice start for us.'

'I'm extremely proud of the way my guys fought,' Sacramento State assistant coach Damon Coupe said. 'Stanford has a lot of depth and experience, and they came out ready to fight.'
