UW Men's Tennis Advances to Second Round of NCAA Tournament
May 11, 2002
STANFORD, Ca. - The 35th-ranked Washington men's tennis team (18-6) defeated No. 32 Tulane (18-8) 4-2 Saturday morning at the Taube Tennis Center to advance to the second round of the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Tournament. The Huskies will face the winner of the Stanford/Sacramento State match played later this afternoon.
'I'm happy we pulled through, because it was a very even match,' said head coach Matt Anger. 'Five of the six singles matches could have gone either way.'
The Huskies got off to a fast start notching the doubles point for the first time in over a month. The No. 1 duo of Ari Strasberg (Ramat-Hasaron, Israel) and Alex Vlaski (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) were defeated by 19th-ranked Michael Kogan and Victor Romero, 8-5.
However, Matt Hanlin (Birmingham, England) and Dillon Ruby (Westlake Village, Calif.) were victorious in the second spot with a 8-3 victory over Hannu Piiroinen and Goran Vasiljevic. Christoph Palmanshofer (St. Georgen, Austria) and Peter Scharler (Salzburg, Austria) clinched the doubles point for UW with an 8-5 defeat of Green Wave duo Jorge Lievano and Mattias Westerburg.
In singles action, Ruby was the first Husky to earn a victory with a dominating 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Vasiljevic in the fifth position. No. 49 Hanlin was next with his 6-4, 6-4 upset of 20th-ranked Kogan at No. 1 singles. Hanlin has been a dominating force in the postseason, now owning a 4-1 all-time record and has not lost since his freshman year when SDSU's Alex Waske defeated the Husky in first round action.
Now up 3-0, Washington was on a roll, but Tulane was not going down easy. Lievano, playing No. 4 singles, defeated UW's Palmanshofer in a tight 7-6(4), 7-6(2) match, to notch the Green Wave's first point. Strasberg would be the next Husky to fall as Westerberg claimed a 7-6(6), 6-3 win to pull Tulane within one point.
No. 29 Vlaski, playing in the second position, clinched the win for UW and earned his 24th win on the year by defeating 56th-ranked Romero, 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-4. Play was suspended for freshman Scharler as the match was decided, however competition was intense as the both he and Piiroinen had each won a set and were tied in the third.
The second round match for Washington will be played at The Farm on Sun., May 12 beginning at noon.
