May 12, 2002
TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona baseball team squandered a six run lead to UCLA in the three-game series finale at Frank Sancet Field on Sunday, eventually falling to the Bruins 18-14. The two teams combined for 35 hits on the afternoon, 15 of which went for extra bases. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 29-20 overall and 7-11 in the Pac-10. UCLA, which won the series two games to one, improved to 24-29 overall and 8-10 in conference play.
The Bruins jumped out to a quick three-run lead in the top of the first on a RBI single by Casey Grzecka and a two-run base knock by Billy Susdorf, but Arizona countered with a nine run outburst in the bottom half of the inning on just four hits.
Aided by a pair of fielding errors by the Bruins and highlighted by sophomore Moises Duran's second grand slam of the season, the Wildcats took a six run advantage after one inning of play. The lead didn't last long as UCLA scored three in the second, one in the third, four in the fifth and three in the sixth to take 14-11 lead. The Bruins then added one in the seventh and three in the ninth to thwart any chance of an Arizona comeback.
Led by Grzecka's 5 for 6, five run and three RBI day, the Bruins rapped out 21 hits off of five different Arizona pitchers as all nine UCLA starters collected at least one hit in the game. Bruin freshman Wes Whisler launched his 13th home run of the season, a three-run shot to straight away center, to account for UCLA's three-run second. He finished the game 2 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Brandon Averill chipped in with four RBIs on four hits in six at bats.
Duran's grand slam highlighted a 3 for 5 effort in the Arizona loss. The sophomore second baseman finished the contest with six RBIs and two runs scored. Senior Chris Cunningham extended his season-high hitting streak to 10 straight games with a solo shot to center field to leadoff the fourth. The home run was his team-leading 13th of the season. Freshman Jeff Van Houten added a three-run homer, his seventh of the season, for the Wildcats.
Mike Castillo (1-1), one of eight UCLA pitchers in the game, picked up the win on the mound for Bruins with one inning of work. Sophomore Tony Sulser was charged with his third loss of the season, surrendering the go-ahead runs in the sixth.
Arizona will host Washington State in a three game series beginning next Friday. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
