Beavers Swept By California

BERKELEY, Calif. - Oregon State was swept in a Pacific-10 baseball series for the first time this season as the Beavers were defeated by California 8-3 Sunday afternoon at Evans Diamond.

Andy Jarvis gave Oregon State (30-18 overall, 9-9 Pacific-10) a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning when he singled home Brian Barden. Chris Biles' sacrifice fly scored Pat Stevens in the third inning, and Aaron Mathews solo homer in the fourth gave the Beavers a 3-1 lead.

California rallied in the fifth inning with an RBI groundout and three two-out RBI singles to take a 5-3 lead. Noah Jackson hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and the Bears added one run in the seventh.

California beat Oregon State 13-7 Friday to open the series and won Saturday 2-1 in a 15-inning game that lasted five hours, 10 minutes.

OSU's Seth Pietsch hit safely in his ninth consecutive game with a fourth inning double Sunday, and Mathews extended his hitting streak to eight games with a 2-for-5 performance. Stevens finished 2-for-3 and also reached base on a walk.

Mark McLemore took the loss for OSU, lasting 4 2-3 innings and allowing five runs.

The Beavers played error-free baseball Sunday and committed just two errors total during the series.

Oregon State will play its final home games of the season when it host Washington in a three-game series. Friday's opener begins at 5 p.m. at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Oregon State's 1952 College World will be honored at Saturday's game, and the Beavers senior players will be honored at Sunday's game.
