Women's Tennis Falls to USC 4-0 in NCAA Tournament Second Round
May 12, 2002
LOS ANGELES - The University of Oregon women's tennis team NCAA Tournament run ended Sunday afternoon at the hands of No. 11-ranked USC, as the Ducks lost 4-0 in the second round at Marks Stadium.
Oregon, in its third NCAA Tournament in the last four seasons, finished the year with a 14-11 dual match record. The 39th-ranked Ducks went 7-2 in their final nine matches, including six wins over ranked opponents.
'I thought we played well today, they were just better than we were,' Oregon coach Jack Griffin said. 'I was really happy with the way we fought. One of our goals this season was to gain some respect, and I think we've done that.'
Despite the outcome, Oregon battled with the help of senior Vickie Gunnarsson and sophomore Courtney Nagle each winning the first set in their singles matches. Their matches eventually were suspended, as the Trojans (19-7) captured the doubles point and had straight-set wins at Nos. 1, 2 and 5 singles. USC next will play UCLA on Thursday in the Round of 16 at Stanford, Calif.
'The matches were pretty competitive,' Griffin said. 'USC is a team that could go deep into the Tournament.'
