Five Washington Softball Players Tabbed For All-Pacific-10 Conference Honors

May 13, 2002

SEATTLE - Five members of the 2002 Washington softball team received recognition from the Pacific-10 Conference, including two first-team all-conference honorees, Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Monday afternoon.

Junior Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) earned first-team all-Pac-10 honors for the third straight year, after leading the team in nearly every offensive category. The team's starting shortstop is hitting .423 with 54 runs scored, 77 hits, 14 doubles, 17 home runs and leads the nation with 68 RBI. Clark, a two-time All-American, is one of 10 finalists for the inaugural USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award and is the fifth Husky to earn first team all-conference honors three times in their career.

The only freshman named to the first team, Kristen Rivera (Perris, Calif.) helped the Huskies rebound from a 1-4 conference start by going on a tear on offense. Rivera, who is second on the team in batting average (.365), home runs (16) and RBI (59), hit home runs in consecutive games from April 13-20, versus No. 3 Stanford, Oregon and No. 14 Oregon State - all UW victories.

The catcher was one of two Husky players to earn Pac-10 Player Of The Week honors and ranked second in the Pac-10 in conference games in RBI (19) and home runs (7) prior to last weekend's season finale. Rivera is just the third true freshman in program history to be named to the Pac-10 first team.

Sophomore Rita Roach (Norwalk, Calif.) is the team's lone selection on the second team. Roach ranks third on the team in batting with a .356 average, including 37 runs scored, nine extra-base hits and a personal-best 22 stolen bases. Roach, meanwhile, has been a leader in the outfield, throwing out five runners at the plate and recording a .981 fielding percentage with just two errors in her career at the UW.

Sophomore pitcher Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.), the Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year in 2001, is joined by senior outfielder Becky Simpson (Tumwater, Wash.) on the conference honorable mention squad.

The sixth-ranked Washington softball team, which finished its regular season with a 44-16 overall record, will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. as one of eight No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Regionals, May 16-19, at the University of Michigan.
