Husky Alum Butler Posts Canadian Steeple Record

May 13, 2002

EUGENE, Ore. - Former Husky distance runner Margaret Butler this weekend became Canada's all-time record holder in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, establishing a national-record time of 10:12.28 in a fifth-place finish at the Oregon Twilight Meet.

Competing for Victoria-based Kajaks Track Club, Butler bested by more than two and half seconds the previous record mark of 10:14.86 set by Karen Harvey in August of 1999. Butler has been a national record holder before, having established the Canadian Junior Record in the 3,000 meters while competing for Washington in 1997, a record that has since been broken.

A 2000 Washington graduate, Butler owns top-10 UW marks at both 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters, and was the 17th finisher in the former event at the 2000 NCAA Championships.
