PAC-10 SEASON WINDING DOWN:
TWO WEEKENDS OF REGULAR SEASON PLAY REMAIN

The end of regular season play is just two weekends away ... CALIFORNIA will be the first team to finish, as the Golden Bears wrap up the 2002 regular season this week at San Jose State ... No. 20 ARIZONA STATE, UCLA and WASHINGTON have the most games left on its slates, with eight contests left to play in the regular season ... No. 19 USC won two of three games against the Huskies over the weekend to remain at the top of the Pac-10 standings ... No. 7 STANFORD moved into a second-place tie with the Huskies after notching a series win over the Sun Devils last weekend ... ASU hosts the Trojans this weekend and will try to gain ground on the Conference leader ... In other Pac-10 play for this weekend: OREGON STATE hosts UW, UCLA takes on the Cardinal and WASHINGTON STATE plays at ARIZONA.

2002 TEAM NOTES
ARIZONA (29-20, 7-11)
Last Week: UCLA W 10-9 (10), L 3-5, 14-18 This Week: *Washington StateArizona returned to action after having a week off and lost a home Pac-10 series to UCLA. The Wildcats won the series opener, but dropped the next two games by a combined margin of six runs. Arizona's win was a close 10-9 10-inning victory, a game in which it was out-hit 19-9 ... Arizona broke the school single-season record for hit by pitches. After being plunked four times by Bruin pitchers, the 'Cats have now been hit 61 times this season, breaking the previous record of 59 ... SR C Chris Cunningham is riding a season-high 10-game hitting streak. Against UCLA he hit .333 with a triple, home run, two runs scored and one RBI. Cunningham paces the 'Cats in doubles (12), triples (4), home runs (12), total bases (51) and slugging percentage (.596) ... SR SS Brad Hassey leads Arizona in several other stat categories, including runs (47), hits (69) and stolen bases (15) ... Arizona has six games left to play in the regular season; two three-game series against Washington State and at Washington.

ARIZONA STATE (28-18, 10-8)
Last Week: at Stanford L 3-5, W 10-2, L 1-3 This Week: Portland, *USCArizona State dropped two of three games at Stanford last weekend. The Sun Devils out-hit the Cardinal 30-24, but came up short on scoring, losing the two games by a combined score of four runs ... ASU limited Stanford to 10 runs on the weekend, and posted a 3.60 team ERA against the Pac-10's top hitting team ... The one run scored in Sunday's game marked only the 13th time during the the Sun Devils' NCAA record consecutive games scoring streak in which ASU has only scored one run ... SO RHP Mike Esposito improved to 8-5 on the season after pitching in ASU's lone win at Stanford. Esposito struck out five and walked four while limiting the Cardinal to only three hits. Esposito ranks third in the Pac-10 in strikeouts (87) ... FR 3B Jeff Larish hit .417 at Stanford with a triple, home run and six RBI. He is batting .346 with 18 runs and 19 RBI on the season ... ASU closed out its road season with an 8-11 overall record. ASU was 7-5 in Pac-10 road games, however ... ASU returns home this weekend to kick off an eight-game homestand with two midweek games against Portland. The Sun Devils host USC this weekend.

CALIFORNIA (29-26, 11-13)
Last Week: Oregon State W 13-7, 2-1 (15), 8-3 This Week: at San Jose StateCalifornia rebounded from a seven-game losing streak by sweeping Oregon State at home last weekend. The Golden Bears outscored the Beavers 23-11 and out-hit them 33-28 ... The Bears and Beavers played in the second-longest Pac-10 game this season, as Cal edged OSU 2-1 in a 15-inning contest. The five hour and 10 minute game featured 31 runners left on base ... JR C John Baker earned his first Pac-10 Player of the Week award for his efforts over the weekend. Against OSU, he batted .583 (7-for-12) with a double, grand slam home run and three walks. He also scored four times and drove in seven runs ... SO 1B Conor Jackson has been named as one of the Dick Howser Trophy semifinalists. Jackson ranks in the top-10 of several Pac-10 statistical categories including hits (83, 1st), total bases (150, 1st), RBI (61, t1st), home runs (16, t1st), slugging percentage (.694, 2nd), batting average (.384, 3rd), on-base percentage (.464, 5th), doubles (15, t7th) and walks (29, 8th). Jackson is also one of three Pac-10 USA Baseball Team trial invitees ... Cal is guaranteed to finish the regular season with an above .500 winning percentage, as the Bears close out their regular season with a midweek game at San Jose State.

OREGON STATE (30-18, 9-9)
Last Week: at California L 7-13, 1-2 (15), 3-8 This Week: *WashingtonOregon State was swept for the first time in a Pac-10 series this season at California last weekend ... Saturday's game in Berkeley was a pitchers' duel that spanned 15-innings. It marked the longest game of the season for the Beavers. In the contest, OSU was just 2-for-24 with runners on base and 1-for-22 with runners in scoring position ... SO LF Seth Pietsch set the school record for doubles in OSU's series opener at Cal. Pietsch knocked out two doubles in that game to give him 21 on the season, eclipsing the 19 hit by A.J. Marquardt in 1993 and Joe Gerber in 2000. Pietsch leads the Pac-10 with 22 two-baggers and also leads the Conference with six triples. He has 112 total bases on the season, good for a seventh-place tie among league leaders. Pietsch is batting .318 and is on a nine-game hitting streak ... FR CF Aaron Mathews is riding an eight-game hitting streak. He was 5-for-17 against the Bears with a homer and stolen base and has the third-best batting average on the squad, hitting at a .353 clip.

STANFORD (35-14, 11-7)
Last Week: at Santa Clara W 13-2, Arizona State W 5-3, L 2-10, W 3-1 This Week: at Nevada, *at UCLAWith a series win over Arizona State last weekend, Stanford is tied with Washington for second-place in the Conference standings ... The Cardinal has won six of its last seven games and six of its past seven Pac-10 series ... JR RHP Jeremy Guthrie tossed his third consecutive complete game in Stanford's opening win against ASU. Guthrie allowed three runs on eight hits with eight K's and one walk. He leads the league with 96 strikeouts and is second in the Pac-10 with a 2.91 ERA, .237 opposing batting average and 105.1 innings pitched ... The Cardinal stranded 14 runners on base, a season-high for a nine-inning game in Saturday's loss ... JR LHP Tim Cunningham received his first-ever Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honor earning the Cardinal's 3-1 Sunday victory, shutting the Sun Devils out over the first seven innings. Cunningham is 6-2 on the season with a 3.97 ERA ... SO CF Sam Fuld is batting .378, good for a tie for fifth place among Pac-10 leaders. He has nine multi-hit games in the Cardinal's last 10 contests and 15 in their last 17 games.

UCLA (24-29, 8-10)
Last Week: Long Beach State W 7-6, at Arizona L 9-10 (10), W 5-3, 18-14 This Week: UC Riverside, *StanfordUCLA won three of four games last week, a midweek contest against Long Beach State and a Pac-10 series at Arizona ... The Bruins had quite the offensive week, pounding out 60 hits in the four games, including 13 doubles and five home runs ... FR 1B Wes Whisler earned his first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor after hitting .368 (7-for-19) with three home runs. Whisler knocked out multiple hits in three of those contests and extended his hitting streak to 11 games before going 0-for-4 on Saturday. He added six runs and seven RBI ... Several other Bruins also did well at the plate as SR DH Casey Grzecka hit .727 (8-for-11) with a home run, double, six runs and six RBI in just two games played. FR OF Billy Susdorf started two games in the outfield and hit .625 (5-for-8) with his first career homer and two doubles.

USC (30-19, 13-5)
Last Week: Washington W 4-1, L 3-9, W 8-6 This Week: Cal State Fullerton, *at Arizona StateUSC won its series against Washington last weekend to remain in first place in the Pac-10 standings. The Trojans are two games ahead of the second-place Huskies and Cardinal ... JR RHP Anthony Reyes won the series opener allowing just one run on six hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. He is now 4-0 on the season with a 2.72 ERA after not pitching for the first part of the season with a sore right elbow ... UW's Tyler Davidson hit three home runs in the Trojans' loss to the Huskies. He was the first opposing player to hit three home runs off Trojan pitchers since June 6, 1995, when Florida State's J.D. Drew accomplished the feat at the College World Series ... SR OF Brian Barre had a good weekend at the plate for USC, hitting .500 (5-for-10) with a double, home run and three RBI. He is batting .325 and leads the squad with 60 runs ... The Trojans continue to lead the league in batting average (.324), on-base percentage (.409), runs scored (404) and RBI (366). USC places second among Conference leaders in slugging percentage (.488) and strikeouts (372).

WASHINGTON (25-22-1, 11-7)
Last Week: Portland W 10-0, 8-4, at USC L 1-4, W 9-3, L 6-8 This Week: Gonzaga, *at Oregon StateDespite losing two of three games at USC last weekend, Washington has still won nine of its last 12 contests. The Huskies are now tied with Stanford for second-place in the league standings ... In UW's 9-3 win against the Trojans, JR OF Tyler Davidson became the first Husky on record to hit three home runs in a game. No Husky player has hit three in the last 20 years, as single game records have only been kept since the 1980s ... UW's top two hitters in Pac-10 play are both true freshman as C Aaron Hathaway is hitting .356 and 1B Kyle Larsen is batting .333 ... With his home run in Saturday's win, JR CF Jay Garthwaite became only the third Husky in school history to hit 30 career round-trippers ... UW plays a doubleheader against Gonzaga before heading out for its last Pac-10 road series at Oregon State.

WASHINGTON STATE (19-28, 4-14)
Last Week: Lewis-Clark State W 9-7, L 8-13 This Week: Lewis-Clark State, *at ArizonaWashington State took a break from Conference action and split two games against Lewis-Clark State ... The games against the Warriors marked the final home contests for WSU. The Cougars finish their regular season on the road at Arizona and Stanford ... In WSU's win over Lewis-Clark State, JR RHP Eddie Bonine pitched his third complete game of the season allowing seven runs on five hits with six K's ... In the two games over the weekend, SR RF Tyson Boston went 3-for-8 (.375) with two home runs, four runs and five RBI ... WSU ranks third in the Pac-10 with a .315 batting average. The Cougars have grounded into the least amount of double plays of any Pac-10 team this season (12) and have turned 56, good for second-best in the Conference.
