Rower Earns Academic Honor

Seattle - Washington rower Anna Mickelson (Bellevue, Wash./Newport HS) has been named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District 8 Women's At-Large Third Team for her excellence in athletics and academics. Mickelson, who rows in the six seat in Washington's top-ranked varsity eight, carries a 3.63 grade point average in communications.
A total of 30 student-athletes representing 20 different institutions were honored in the at-large category that includes the following women's sports: crew, gymnastics, skiing, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, water polo, field hockey, lacrosse, tennis, golf and rifle. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 grade point average and play a significant role on her team. The 30 honorees will now be on the national ballot to earn Academic All-America honors.
In all, 94 women were nominated by 36 different schools on the District 8 ballot that includes schools from California, Hawaii, Alaska, British Columbia, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and Utah. Mickelson, who has earned several Pac-10 Conference and national academic and athletic awards during her tenure at Washington, was one of four rowers among the honorees.
Mickelson has helped lead the Husky varsity eight to an undefeated season and No. 1 national ranking. The Huskies are currently preparing for the Pac-10 Championships May 19 where they will attempt to claim an 11th straight conference crown. Following that, the team departs for Indianapolis where it will defend its NCAA Championship on Eagle Creek, May 31-June 2.
