Keira Goerl No-Hits Eastern Kentucky in NCAA Regional Play
May 17, 2002
COLUMBIA, SC - UCLA's offense posted 10 runs on eight hits while Bruin sophomore Keira Goerl pitched her sixth no-hitter of the season on Friday night as UCLA defeated Eastern Kentucky 10-0 in five innings. Goerl struck out 11 and faced just one batter over the minimum. UCLA (52-6) advances in the winners bracket of NCAA Regional I in Columbia, S.C., and will face second-seeded Georgia on Saturday at 1:30 pm EDT.
The Bruins, who batted as the visiting team in the game, opened their scoring in the second, manufacturing their first run of the game. The rally started with a lead-off walk to Stacey Nuveman that was followed by two Bruins, Claire Sua and Crissy Buck, grounding into fielders choices. Buck, however, stole second on a heads-up play while the Colonels were not covering second base after throwing Sua out at second on the fielders choice. With Buck standing on second, Stephanie Ramos stepped in and lined a single into right center field, scoring Buck to give UCLA the 1-0 lead.
UCLA's offensive continued in the third inning, when UCLA batted around, scoring four runs. Right fielder Monique Mejia drew a lead-off walk, before promptly recording her first two stolen bases since dislocating a finger on her left (glove) hand on April 19. Mejia would score on a single to centerfield by Tairia Mims. Nuveman would then draw her second walk of the game, followed by a walk to Sua to load the bases. Buck then delivered with a two-RBI double to right center, scoring Mims and Nuveman, before being replaced by senior Casey Hiraiwa to pinch-run.
Meanwhile, Bruin starting pitcher Keira Goerl was fanning her way through the Eastern Kentucky lineup, striking out six of the first nine batters she faced, including five straight K's beginning with the final out of the first inning, and finishing with 11 strikeouts for her 12th double-figure strikeout game of the 2002 season. Goerl finished with a no-hitter, her sixth of the season, and was a lone walk shy of the perfect game. She is the first Bruin pitcher since Lisa Fernandez (1993) to toss six no-hitters in a single season. Goerl threw just 56 pitches in the game, 44 of them for strikes.
With the 10-0 five-inning run-rule victory, UCLA advances in the winners half of the NCAA Regional bracket and will face second-seeded Georgia at 1:30 pm EDT on Saturday. The game will be broadcast live on www.uclabruins.com with Ryan Nuveman calling the broadcast.
