OSU Rally Falls Short

May 17, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State cut into a five-run deficit in the late innings but fell a run short Friday night in a 6-5 loss to Washington in Pacific-10 baseball at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Beavers put the tying and winning runs on base in the ninth inning but couldn't bring them home.

The Beavers (30-19 overall, 9-10 Pacific-10) and Huskies (27-23-1, 12-7) continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m.; OSU's 1952 College World Series team, which is celebrating a 50th reunion this weekend, will be honored before the game. The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m., and both games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Friday, Oregon State fell behind 5-1 in the middle of the sixth inning but got a run-scoring double from Will Hudson and a run-scoring single by Brian Barden to get within 6-4 after seven innings.

In the ninth, Wick Udy led off with a walk against Washington righthander Shawn Kohn and was balked to second; he scored on Hudson's one-out single to make it a one-run game. With two out, Andy Jarvis was hit by a Kohn pitch to push Hudson into scoring position with the tying run and put the winning run on base in pinch-runner Tom Creighton.

Seth Pietsch then lofted a flyball into short right-centerfield that looked as though it might drop between a trio of Huskies, but rightfielder Taylor Johnson made a running catch to end the game.

Ben Rowe took the loss for the Beavers, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing five runs (all earned) on 10 hits while walking one and striking out one. After allowing single runs in the first and second innings, the sophomore righthander pitched three straight scoreless frames until the Huskies came up with three runs on four hits and a Beaver error in the sixth to make it 5-1.

Kohn's complete game improved his record to 10-4 this season as he scattered 10 OSU hits, walking two and striking out five.

Pietsch extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a run-scoring double to left-centerfield in the bottom of the fourth inning; it also pushed his OSU record for doubles in a season to 23. Aaron Mathews moved his hitting streak to eight games with a double in the Beavers' two-run seventh.

Hudson was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs for Oregon State, while Barden was 2-for-5.

For Washington, Tila Reynolds was 3-for-5 with a double and Kyle Larsen was 3-for-5, while Aaron Hathaway was 2-for-5 with a homer.
