Cal Finishes 12th at NCAA Regional

May 18, 2002

ALBURQUERQUE, NM - The California men's golf team fell one shot shy of a playoff that might have landed them in the NCAA Championships today, scoring +1 on the final day of the West Regional in New Mexico with a tournament score of +19. The third and final round represented the culmination of a late charge by the Golden Bears, who began the tournament in 24th place, and finished at the 12th spot.

Teams needed to finish among the top ten to advance the NCAA Championships. Since there was a two-way tie at the tenth spot, Texas Tech defeated San Diego State in a playoff match. Both teams finished regular tournament play at 882. The Bears finished one stroke back, at 883, +19 for the tournament.

Individually, the Bears' top finisher was PeteR Tomasulo, who wrapped up the tournament in a 14th-place tie with 217. Finishing just behind was Jeff Hood, who shot a final day 69 to come in tied at 16, with a 218 score.

Cal's run in the tournament began Friday, when the Bears rocketed up the leaderboards by shooting the day's low round of 286, 2 under par, which sent them from 24th to 15th.
