Cal Struggles on Day One of Pac-10 Championships

May 18, 2002

PULLMAN, Wash. - The California men's and women's track and field teams had a mixed start on the first day of the 2002 Pac-10 Championships at Mooberry Track and Field Complex.

Heading into Sunday's final day of competition, the Cal women are ninth with 16 points, while the men are also ninth but with four points. Stanford leads the women's (51 points) and men's (58) team competitions. The Bear women are only one point out of seventh.

Senior Lauren Dudugjian was the only Bear woman to score on Saturday, as she took sixth in the high jump with a mark of 5-7.25. Her three points today made her a four-time Pac-10 scorer for the Bears in the high jump.

Senior Bubba McLean also was the only scorer for the Cal men. He posted one posted one point for his eighth-place performance in the pole vault (17-3.5). McLean finished second at last year's conference meet in the same event.

If nine places, instead of eight, scored in each event, the Bears would have had numerous additional point-getters. On the women's side, ninth-place finishes came from senior Marielle Schlueter in the 3000mSC (11:21.61), sophomore Cynthia Mallory in the high jump (5-7.25) and junior Sheni Russell in the shot put (46-9). The Bear men also had three ninth-place showings - senior Corey Creasey in the 10,000m (31:40.10), junior Zech Whittington in the hammer (172-4) and junior Joe Berro in the javelin (200-00).

Three Cal athletes qualified for tomorrow's finals. Junior Ahmad Wright was the top runner in the preliminaries of the 400mH, clocking in at 51.67. Senior Erin Belger advanced in the 800m with the sixth-best time (2:07.13), and sophomore Deanna Slaton moved on to the 400mH final, finishing seventh in 60.07.

The Bears have a chance to finish strong Sunday, as the day is devoted exclusively to finals.
