May 18, 2002
MESA, Ariz. - Shortstop Michael Moon's three-run homer in the seventh was the difference Saturday and the No. 19 USC Trojans defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils, 9-5, in Pac-10 Conference action at HoHoKam Stadium. Moon's homer was his fourth of the season and gave the Trojans a 4-2 lead.
USC improves to 31-21 overall and 14-6 in Pac-10 Conference play while Arizona State falls to 31-19 and 11-9 in conference. The Trojans remain in first place, one game ahead of Washington, who defeated Oregon State earlier. Stanford is in third place, two games behind USC, after the Cardinal lost today at UCLA while Arizona State is three games behind in fourth place.
Jordan Olson (2-2) threw 3 1/3 no-hit inning in relief to earn the victory for the Trojans. Both pitching staffs walked a combined 17 batters after neither team allowed a walk in ASU's 3-1 win on Friday.
The Sun Devils took a 1-0 lead in the first after Jeremy West's fly ball with two outs bounced off left fielder Nick Mosich's glove, scoring Dustin Pedroia.
USC answered by loading the bases in the third and scoring a run on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Bill Peavey.
In the Sun Devil third, Sergio Garcia led off with a single. West singled and third baseman Jeff Larish walked to load the bases. With two outs, right field Nick Cadena hit a line shot that hit third base and rolled into left field. Moon fielded the ball while sliding and threw out Larish at third before West could score the second run, giving ASU a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Sun Devils had a runner at third with two outs. Olson intentionally walked Rod Allen and got Larish to ground out to first to end the threat. USC capitalized in the top of the seventh when McClellan made an error off the mound on a bunt attempt by Kris Cox. ASU reliever Mark Sopko entered the game, striking out third baseman Jon Brewster and walking center fielder Brian Barre before Moon hit his home run.
Sopko (2-2) took the loss for the Sun Devils, allowing three runs in an inning of work.
USC added three runs in the eighth on an RBI single by Michael Morales and two-run single by Barre to left field. The Sun Devils scored three runs in the ninth off Trojan reliever Jon Williams, but Cory Campos struck out Cadena looking to end the game.
The Trojans will conclude their series with the Sun Devils tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live, along with Live Stats play-by-play, on usctrojans.com.
