Bruins Capture Two Medals at the PCRC's

Lake Natoma - The UCLA women's rowing team competed at the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships, today, in Rancho Cordova, Calif. The Bruins, racing a Novice Four and Varsity Four, overcame strong afternoon winds to capture two medals in the finals.
The UCLA Novice 4, grouped with Chapman University, UC San Diego, and Humboldt State, raced in Heat 1 of the Women's Collegiate Novice 4+. The Bruins (8:06.20) led from the start, steadily increasing separation to win by 12-seconds and qualify for the finals. Chapman (8:18.10) crossed the line next, followed by Humboldt State (8:20.10), and UC San Diego (8:26.00).
In the Women's Collegiate Novice 4+ Finals, the Bruins trailed San Diego State by only 2-seconds at the halfway point, with UC Davis 4-seconds behind. San Diego State (8:37.50) rowed to a 5-second lead coming into the final sprint and went on to take the victory. UCLA (8:46.00) crossed the line in second to capture the silver medal, and UC Davis (8:50.60) placed third. Chapman (9:10.60), Sacramento State (9:19.30), and Humboldt State (9:27.20) rounded off the competition.
In Varsity action, the Bruin Varsity competed in the Women's Open Four Final against Stanford, Oregon, Chapman, Humboldt State, and St. Mary's College. In the first 500m, the Bruins were in third place, 5-seconds behind the leader, Stanford. At the halfway point, UCLA was still in third, but second-place Oregon trailed Stanford by only 2-seconds and was making a move. In an explosive last 1000m, Oregon (8:55.40) came out on top, winning decisively by 17-seconds. Stanford (9:12.20) placed second, and UCLA (9:22.50) finished third, earning a bronze. Humboldt State (9:33.40), St. Mary's College 'A' (9:40.90), Chapman (10:03.20), and St. Mary's College 'B' (10:14.10) rounded off the competition.
