May 22, 2002
STANFORD, Calif. - Cal's doubles tandem of Raquel Kops-Jones and Jody Scheldt (10-12) was eliminated from the NCAA Doubles Championship today, dropping a first round decision to Indiana's Karie Schlukebir and Linda Tran, 6-1, 7-6.
Playing a rare best-of-three set doubles match, Schlukebir and Tran, ranked No. 36 by the ITA with a 34-9 record, jumped out to a quick 6-1 first-set victory. Kops-Jones and Sheldt battled back in the second set, but ultimately lost a tie-breaker.
Kops-Jones and Scheldt, ranked No. 20 in the nation, had not played a match together since April 20, the last dual match of the regular season.
With the loss, all Cal participants have been eliminated from the NCAA Championships.
