COMING UP: The Washington baseball team (13-8 in the Pac-10, 28-24-1 overall), winner of 12 of its last 17 games, enters the final weekend of the regular season tied for second place in the Pac-10 along with Stanford, one game behind first-place USC. The Huskies play host to Arizona (8-13, 30-22) in a three-game series to close out the year. Friday's game is at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, game time is 1:00 p.m. The games will not air on radio in the Seattle area, though the Arizona broadcast can be heard on the internet via arizonaathletics.com. The Huskies, despite a tough non-conference showing this year, are still very much in the hunt for not only the Pac-10 title, but for a berth in the 64-team NCAA tournament field. Here's a rundown of this weekend's slate, with probable UW starting pitchers:

Fri., May 24 -- Arizona at UW, 6:30 p.m. -- RHP Shawn Kohn (10-4, 3.17)
Sat., May 25 -- Arizona at UW, 1:00 p.m. -- RHP Sean White (5-2, 4.87)
Sun., May 26 -- Arizona at UW, 1:00 p.m. -- TBA

POSTSEASON OUTLOOK: If Washington can beat out USC (14-8, 31-22) for the Pac-10 championship, the Huskies would receive an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament, the field for which will be announced on ESPN2 next Monday morning at 9:30 a.m. PDT. If the Huskies end in a two-way tie with USC, the Trojans would take the league's automatic berth thanks to a 2-1 series win over Washington. A two-way tie between the Huskies and Stanford would give the UW the berth as the Huskies won two of three vs. Stanford. A three-way tie would be broken by the three teams' record against the fourth-place team (the first tie breaker is record against the other two tied teams, but all three teams are 3-3 in that category), which could be one of three teams. There is also a scenario in which Washington, Stanford, USC and Arizona State all tie for the title. Stanford would earn the berth if that happened.

COACH 'K': In nine seasons as the head coach of his alma mater, Ken Knutson has led the Dawgs to two Pac-10 championships, four Pac-10 Northern Division titles, two second-place finishes and three NCAA Regionals. His career overall record stands at 342-232-1 (.596). With those 340 wins, he is the second-winningest coach in UW history, trailing only Bob MacDonald (422). Before becoming the Husky head man in 1993, Knutson served as the Husky pitching coach for eight seasons. In 1985, his UW pitching staff led the nation with a 2.80 ERA. Knutson holds a 166-75-1 (.688) record in home games. He is 150-105 (.588) in conference games. Knutson has coached 35 first-team All-Pac-10 selections in nine seasons, and has been named league coach of the year three times. A 1981 All-Pac-10 left-handed pitcher at the UW, he is joined by assistant coaches Joe Ross, Travis Jewett, and Gregg Swenson and undergraduate assistants Daniel Jahn and Duggan Moran.

LAST WEEKEND: Washington travelled to Oregon State and won two of three in Corvallis. Friday night, Shawn Kohn threw his seventh complete game and got his 10th victory as the Huskies held on for a 6-5 win. Aaron Hathaway homered for the UW and both Kyle Larsen and Tila Reynolds had three hits. Saturday, Michael Done homered twice and Hathaway and Tyler Davidson hit one each in a 13-3 win. Sean White allowed three runs over seven and two-thirds innings. Sunday, the Beavers avoided the sweep with a 5-3 win, scoring three unearned runs in the first.

SERIES HISTORY: Arizona and Washington have met only 10 times, with the Wildcats winning six of the 10. Last year, the 'Cats swept a three-game series in Tucson to close out the season. The U of A won by scores of 8-3, 5-2 and 18-6. In Arizona's only previous trip to Husky Ballpark, Washington won the series opener (6-2) before dropping the next two, 14-8 and 3-2. The UW took two of three from Arizona in Tucson in 1999. Prior to the nine conference meetings over the last three years, the only other UW-UA game came at the 1992 NCAA West I Regionals in Tucson, which the UW won, 6-5.

TURNING IT AROUND?: There is little debate that the Husky season hit its low point in an error-filled three-game sweep at Missouri April 5-7, but since hitting bottom, the Huskies have played so well that they're a solid threat to make the NCAA tournament. Those three losses were the last three of a seven-game losing streak and the Huskies have won 16 of 25 since then. In those 25 games, the Huskies' team ERA is a very respectable 4.48 and Husky pitchers have walked only 55 (opponents have walked 95) while striking out 137 in 225.0 innings of work. Defensively, the improvement is even more stark as the Huskies have committed only 22 errors over the 25 games, good for a very solid .978 fielding percentage. The UW's weekend starting trio of Shawn Kohn, Sean White and Clay Johnson have combined for 130.1 innings in 18 starts during that time, allowing 60 earned runs and only 28 walks, good for a 4.14 ERA.
