Tennis Seniors Advance In NCAA Singles And Doubles Tournament

May 23, 2002

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - USC men's tennis seniors Nick Rainey and Ryan Moore are not coming home a day sooner than necessary as the ninth-ranked doubles tandem recorded a first round victory at the NCAA Division I Doubles Championship Thursday at Texas A&M.

A 5-8 seed in the doubles championship, Rainey and Moore defeated Oliver Choo and Jonathan Chu of Harvard in the opening round. The match was not an easy one as the Trojans' No. 1 doubles team - playing their fifth match in six days - needed three-sets, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, to defeat the 44th-ranked Harvard pair. Rainey and Moore will face Minnesota's Thomas Haug and Harsh Mankad on Friday, May 24, at 4 p.m. CST in the Round of 16.

Rainey also continued his run in the singles tournament on Thursday by defeating Baylor's eighth-seeded Benjamin Becker, 6-2, 6-1. He will face unseeded Todd Widom of Miami in the Round of 16 on Friday at Noon CST. Unseeded at the start of the singles championship, Rainey's two tournament singles victories have already earned him 2002 ITA All-American honors - the first of his career at USC.

He and Moore also automatically earn their third-straight career doubles All-American titles by entering the championship tournament as a 5-8 seed.
