May 23, 2002
STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Claire Carter and junior Darija Klaic received All-America accolades for advancing further than any previous Washington duo before falling in three sets to the tournament's top seed on Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Doubles Championships at Stanford's Taube Tennis Center.
Ranked No. 23 nationally, Carter and Klaic opened the tournament Wednesday with a 7-6(3), 6-2 victory over No. 30 Ziva Grasic and Vladka Uhlirova of Texas. Later that day, they upset sixth-ranked Tiffany Brymer and Jewel Peterson of USC by a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) tally to earn a quarterfinal encounter with top-ranked Lauren Kalvaria and Gabriela Lastra of Stanford.
The Cardinal tandem won the first set 6-4 before Carter and Klaic battled back to even the score with a tiebreaker triumph in the second set. With the game score tied at 6-6, the Huskies out-pointed Stanford 9-7 in the tiebreaker to set up the decisive third set.
Kalvaria and Lastra stepped up their effort, winning the first four games of the third set en route to a 6-2 decision that secured the 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-2 match victory.
Carter and Klaic became the first doubles team in Husky history to reach the NCAA quarterfinals. The only other UW pair to win an NCAA doubles match was Katherine Costain and Kori Sosnowy who were first-round victors in 1996 before losing in the second round.
Both Klaic and Carter competed with other partners in the 2001 NCAA doubles championships and both UW pairs were eliminated in the first round.
